By law, the gold in U.S. Mint American Buffalo Gold Bullion Coins must originate from newly mined sources in America. All the coins are struck at the United States Mint at West Point, New York, but do not have a mint mark.

The obverse of the Buffalo displays James Earl Fraser's classic design of a Native American Indian believed to be based on three different American Indians: Chief Iron Tail of the Lakota Sioux, Chief Two Moons of the Cheyenne, and a third who has never been positively identified. Fraser, once a student of the famous sculptor and designer of the most beautiful U.S. coins, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, named two of the three Native American Indians before his death, but could not remember the third.

The reverse features a bison believed to have been modeled after "Black Diamond", a popular attraction at New York's Zoological Gardens.
