First introduced in 1986, the Australian Gold Nugget is one of the most desired gold bullion coins minted by the Perth Mint in Western Australia. It is one of few legal tender bullion gold coins to change its design every year, which together with its limited annual mintage, may increase their numismatic value. The original design depicted Australian gold nuggets. In 1989, the design changed to the kangaroo. The coin is recognized both, as an Australian "Nugget" and a "Kangaroo". The coins come in denominations of 1/20 oz, 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, 1 oz, 2 oz, 10z, and 1 kg of 24 carat gold.

The obverse features Queen Elizabeth II facing to the right. She is circled by her name, the inscription, "Australia", and the value of the coin. The reverse initially depicted the Australian gold nugget. The design changed to the kangaroo in 1989.
