1885 $20 Liberty
Although $1, $2.5, $5 and $10 gold coins were already in circulation, the Mint realized that it could increase production of gold coins by minting a $20 gold coin, or double eagle, in half the time it took to produce two $10 gold coins with the same amount of gold.
The 1885 $20 Liberty Head has the second lowest mintage of all $20 liberty gold with a mintage of only 751 coins. If one were to exclude the proof striking there was a paltry strike of 674 coins for the entire country! US double eagles have historically been the most popular of all US gold numismatics.
