The 1897 is one of the rarest proofs from the 1890s, the original mintage of just 86 pieces representing a significant reduction from the total of 128 coins that the Mint achieved for the 1896. The number of coins extant for the 1897 is probably fewer than 30 pieces.

The Liberty Head exhibits a smooth, satiny sheen and the strike is razor sharp throughout. The obverse of the coin depicts Liberty's head circled by thirteen stars. She faces to the left and wears a coronet inscribed with the word "LIBERTY". The reverse depicts a simple wreath encircling the date and value of the coin, along with "In God We Trust" and the "United States of America" inscribed.
