One of the higher-profile business strikes from the later Liberty Double Eagle series, the 1906-P has a mintage of just 69,596 pieces. Some of the demand focused on circulated and Mint State survivors have extended to survivors of the year's proof delivery, itself a highly coveted rarity with a mere 94 pieces produced. US double eagles have historically been the most popular of all US gold numismatics.

The Liberty Head exhibits a smooth, satiny sheen and the strike is razor sharp throughout. The obverse of the coin depicts Liberty's head circled by thirteen stars. She faces to the left and wears a coronet inscribed with the word "LIBERTY". The reverse depicts a simple wreath encircling the date and value of the coin, along with "In God We Trust" and the "United States of America" inscribed.
