Since its introduction in 1997 as an extension of the American Eagle Bullion Program, the Platinum Eagle has become one of the world's most widely-traded platinum bullion coins and is the official platinum bullion coin of the United States. Platinum Eagles are also the only bullion coin guaranteed by the United States Government for weight, content, and .9995 purity.

Proof Platinum Eagle coins are struck multiple times to provide a unique finish. The dies used in this process also give the coins a mirror-like appearance, in which the image on the coin appears to be floating over the liquid of the field.

The obverse design of the coin features a rendition of the Statue of Liberty designed by John Mercanti. It bears the inscriptions "Liberty", "E Pluribus Unum", and "In God We Trust" as well as the date. The reverse designs change annually for Proof Platinum Eagles and 2011 will be the third of six proof designs representing the principles found in the Preamble of the Constitution of the United States. The 2011 Proof American Platinum Eagle will depict, "To Insure Domestic Tranquility."

The US Mint is yet to announce the final reverse design of the 2011 Proof Platinum Eagle, but the obverse will be the same as the 2009 proof described and shown right. The Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee's recommended 2011 reverse design showing a harvest goddess in a field, with a sheaf of wheat and a dove is shown right.
