What is unique about the $2.5 (and $5) Indian Head gold coins is that they were the first and only U.S. gold coins to use the incuse relief design or the appearance of a sunken impression rather than raised. This was a very controversial and undesirable design in its time, due to the mistaken impression that the sunken design of the coin would act as a breeding ground of disease.
