$2.5 Liberty
The best known American coin design of the 19th century and a classic symbol of America's golden past, the quarter eagle was redesigned by Christian Gobrecht in 1840, and his "Liberty Head" also known as the "Coronet Type" was minted from 1840 to 1907. This is the longest period of time the design of any coin in U.S. history went without a major change or alteration, with the exception of minor changes to the reverse.
Of the millions of $2.5 Liberty Gold Coins which were first minted, almost all were heavily used as currency or melted down during the Depression, making them exceptionally scarce, especially in uncirculated condition.
