Minted from 1839 to 1907, the design of the $5 Liberty was created by Christian Gobrecht. Five-dollar Liberty gold coins were the pocket currency of daily life for much of the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Often overlooked in favor of larger-denomination U.S. gold coins with greater gold content, these smaller coins are an excellent value. The vast majority were heavily worn in circulation or melted down during gold confiscation of 1933. Out of the millions originally minted, only a tiny fraction has survived in uncirculated condition.

The obverse features Lady Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed with the word 'LIBERTY' with her hair worn in a tight bun. Thirteen stars representing the thirteen original colonies and the date of issue surround her.

The reverse features a proud bald eagle with wings spread, standing among olive branches and clinching three arrows behind a shield featuring stars and stripes and the words 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA', the denomination, and the mint mark surrounding it. There is no 'IN GOD WE TRUST' motto on coins dated 1839 through 1865, but in 1866, it was added on a flowing banner above the eagle.
