The ducat is a gold coin that was used as a trade coin throughout Europe before World War I. The Austrian Ducat I gold coins were minted throughout the 19th Century and into the 21st Century and are extremely high in gold purity, making them highly sought after. The coin features Franz Josef I because during his reign from 1848 as Emperor of Austria, and 1867 as King of Hungary, the Austro-Hungarian Empire was created. This is also why 1 gold Ducats feature the name of each country.

The obverse features Franz Josef I surrounded by the words, "FRANC•IOS•I•D•G•AVSTRIAE•IMPERATOR". The reverse features Austria's coat of arms of Austria superimposed over a crowned Imperial double-headed eagle. The words, "LOD•ILL•REX A•A•," the date, and "HVNGAR•BOHEM•GAL•" encircle the eagle.
