Issued from 1892 to 1918, Korona gold coins are amongst the most easily encountered Hungarian coins. Franz Joseph I, who was Emperor of Austria, King of Bohemia, and Apostolic King of Hungary from 1848 to 1916, is featured on the obverse of the Korona. Early in his reign, Emperor Franz Joseph survived an assassination attempt and went on to build Austria-Hungary into Europe's second largest country geographically (after the Russian Empire), and the third most populous (after Russia and the German Empire).
