Spanish 25 Peseta

The peseta was introduced in 1869 after Spain joined the Latin Monetary Union in 1868. Gold 25 pesetas coins were introduced in 1876 and feature Alfonso XII, the Spanish monarch who during his brief reign attempted to move Spain towards a constitutional monarchy. In 1881, it was decreed that the king's image be updated and the result of this shows a great difference compared to the initial one from 1876. Such differences were not so noticeable in the mints from 1876, 1877 (shown), 1878, 1879 and 1880 where only slight changes can be seen to the head and features of Alfonso XII.

In 1889, 20 pesetas coins were introduced, with production of the 25 pesetas ceasing. Euro coins and notes were introduced in January 2002, and on March 1, 2002, the peseta lost its legal tender status in Spain.
